Anambra Decides – 2021 Gubernatorial Races

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the results of Anambra’s state election held on the 6th of November 2021 inconclusive. This is because there was no voting in Ihiala local government area. The spokesperson of the commission, Florence Obi, made this announcement in the early hours of Monday.

Why it matters?
According to INEC, Ihiala local government area has over 148,000 registered voters. INEC says voting materials were not available, because of the security threats that this region has faced in recent times. The results of voting in this local government can prove to be a determining factor in the overall results in the state.

In a statement released by the returning officer for INEC, Mrs. Obi said that; “Based on constitutional considerations and provisions of the Electoral Act and the Revised Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections issued by for the commission, supplementary election is indicated for Ihiala Local Government Area”. Constitutionally, a winner must receive the highest number of votes cast and 25% of votes cast in at least two-third of the local government areas of the state, she explained.

The Big Picture.
So far, the candidate of All progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Charles Soludo, having 103,946 votes of the total votes, is leading to the cumulative results announced in 20 out of the 21 local government areas in Anambra state. He is followed by Valentine Ozigbo of Peoples Democratic Party who has 51,322.

APGA has won in 18 local government areas, while PDP and YPP have won one each.

Conclusion.
The supplementary election would take place on Tuesday, 9th of November 2021 as the citizens wait to announce their new governor.
