Latest statistics shown by the Nigerian Communications Commission reveal that telcos in Nigeria lost 9.28 million users in 2021.

Why it matters?
Reports say that in January 2021, there were 150,898,122 users of telecommunications services in Nigeria. But that figure dropped to 141,617,023 at the close of the year. Telecommunication companies say that the significant drop in users is due to the Federal Government policy of NIN-Sim linkage.

Breaking down the figure by company, MTN Nigeria got the biggest loss. In 2021 alone, the company lost 5,176,068. Airtel, on the other hand, lost 2,507,138 while Globacom and 9mobile lost 470,502 and 1,127,391, respectively. Regardless of the loss of users, MTN in a report still professed support for the government initiative of NIN-Sim linkage.
