The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono has revealed that the Federal Government agreed to the demands of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) “under duress”.

Why it matters?
There has been a back and forth between ASUU and the Federal Government in recent weeks. The Federal Government had in 2020 agreed to the union’s terms, which resulted in a suspension of the strike action back then.

Few weeks back, ASUU gave the federal government an ultimatum to uphold the terms of the agreement, but the Government did not respond. Echono while speaking at the University of Abuja’s retreat for the school authorities, said that the Federal Government agreed to terms “under duress.”

In related news, ASUU would determine whether to begin another strike after its zonal conferences scheduled for December 15th.
