Former president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki has openly declared his support for direct primary. In an interview in Kwara state, he says direct primary is the “best for political parties if done properly”.
Why does it matter?
Direct primary is an electoral process whereby every registered member of a political party has a say in who becomes the candidate for that party. He says that signing this bill into law will be President Buhari doing what’s best for Nigerians.
The Big Picture.
There are reports that governors under political party of APC and PDP and other lawmakers have kicked against this bill. Therefore, the former Senate president in his speech urged politicians to embrace the approval of the direct primary law.
He said that: “Direct primary is best for political parties if properly done. But I am sure Nigerians are not prepared for it because there is still a lot of work to be done.
“But now that the National Assembly has passed it, we should make the best out of the situation rather than allowing the controversy, which is one item, to throw away the other good parts of the bill. What is important, is for the President to sign it and enable Nigerians to benefit from the other parts.”
