The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has on Monday released the immediate past governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, on bail.
Current situation
Willie Obiano has regained his freedom after five days’ of detention in EFCC’s custody for allegedly inflating the state government’s budget during his tenure and diverting funds of about N42 billion.
Background to the story
They disembarked the immediate past governor of Anambra State from an international flight to the United States on Thursday just after handing over to his successor, Prof Charles Soludo. The anti-graft agency has had the former governor on its radar for years but was restricted in that sitting governors possess immunity shielding them from being officially investigated.
What they are saying
EFCC’s chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, has clearly stated that Willie Obiano’s arrest is not a political one as the anti-graft agency is working within the bounds of its duties. The commission, meanwhile, has not officially confirmed the charges against the ex-governor.
