The Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amarachi has instructed the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), to hand over a few of its operational activities to Secure ID at the Abuja – Kaduna rail service.
Driving the news
By the Minister’s directive, Secure ID would add to its existing responsibility of handling the E-ticketing platform, passenger identification, in order to incorporate a facial recognition system at the Abuja – Kaduna rail service.
- According to the Minister, this system is not just a post security measure to catch criminals but to curb security challenges along the rail routes.
Why this matter
Mr. Rotimi Amaechi pointed out in his speech that Secure ID has in the past helped the federal government increase its revenue by N300 million, blocking all revenue leakages. By this projection, the federal government has a high probability of achieving its goals of securing rail service in Nigeria and increasing its revenue.
What they are saying
Mr. Michael Ohiani, the Acting Director-General of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) said that the agreement awaiting approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) is a 10 year deal. He also projected that the federal government would generate over N140 billion in revenue in the 10 years.
