The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, in an interview said that the Federal Government is to begin evacuation of Nigerians to neighboring countries on Wednesday.

Why it matters.
With the war between Ukraine and Russia nearing no end, the Federal Government has devised a plan to airlift at least 2000 Nigerians from Ukraine to neighboring countries. Although both countries have begun peace talks, there were still reports of bombings in certain parts of Ukraine on Monday.

The Minister, speaking in an interview on Channels TV, said that the Federal Government is working closely with Air Peace and Max Air to ensure the safe passage of Nigerians. He added that most Nigerians in Ukraine are students and the airlines would be available from Wednesday to pick up as many as are willing to go.

Also, in a report to the House of Representatives, the Minister said the base in Romania for evacuated Nigerians has over 1000 people. In Poland about 250 and a reasonable amount in Hungary and Slovakia.
