Members of the House of Representatives have ordered the Ad hoc Committee on Arms to look into the reports of missing firearms by the Auditor-General of the Federation, Adolphus Aghughu.

Why it matters?
The reports by Adolphus Aghughu say that about 178,459 firearms have gone missing from the different units of the Nigerian Police nationwide. The missing weapons include AK-47, pistols, and other rifles.

The Deputy Minority Leader (Enugu), Toby Okechukwu, moved the motion. In his debate, he said that the missing firearms could be a reason for the increase in violence all over the country. Deputy Speaker Idris Wase (Plateau) supported the motion and suggested that a thorough investigation would reveal a lot about the missing firearms.

The lawmakers assigned the investigation to an existing committee to investigate the matter and also urged the Inspector-General of Police to take urgent action.
