The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, in his latest interview on Monday has revealed the reason the Federal Government is looking to regulate social media in Nigeria.

In an interview with a radio station in Abuja, the Minister discussed matters regarding the lifting of the ban on Twitter, the government expectations and social media contents. Speaking on the lifting of Twitter ban, the Minister said one agreement between both parties was that the microblogging site would have a headquarters in Nigeria. This, according to the Minister, is the expectation of the government by the end of March 2022.

The Minister also added that Twitter agreed to pay taxes for its operation in Nigeria according to the country’s domestic laws as well as other social media platforms. Regarding social media contents, the Minister said that the Federal Government wants to regulate social media to ensure that the contents on these platforms are in the country’s interest.
