The House of Assembly and House of Representatives have on Monday voted against the bill to pay the presiding officer’s life pension.

According to the recommendations submitted to both houses last week, the sponsor sought to amend the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to provide pension for presiding officers of the National Assembly. Speaking on the proposed bill, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, said that the lawmakers have conclusively decided not to move forward with the bill. 

The lawmakers also decided on how to proceed when the president withholds his assent from a proposed bill. The proposed bill says that “where the President withholds his assent and the bill is again voted upon by each House of the National Assembly by a four-fifths majority, the bill shall become law.”
