Innocent Nnamdi, the captain of Nigeria for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, took home a bronze medal on Thursday in the men’s lightweight para-powerlifting competition.

Despite successfully lifting 190 kg for a total of 132.5 points, Nnamdi was unable to win the gold. Bonnie Gustin of Malaysia scored 154.6 points, winning the gold medal and breaking the previous Games record. Mark Swan of England won the silver medal with 145.5 points, placing Nnamdi in third.

Thomas Kure, another Nigerian, came in fourth place with the same number of points as Nnamdi but a lift of 180 kg.

Nigerian competitors Onyinyechi Mark and Latifat Tijani were disqualified from the women’s event final.

However, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) was unable to ascertain the cause of their disqualification. However, an appeal has been sent to the International Paralympic Committee, according to a Team Nigeria representative at the Games who requested anonymity and spoke to NAN (IPC).
