The federal government, through Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), has announced the resumption of train service along the Abuja-Kaduna rail line on the 23rd of May 2022.

Driving the news 
While speaking on Monday, the Deputy Director, Public Relations of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr. Yakub Mahmood, said the corporation would be adopting extra security measures throughout the country. 

  • Passengers would present a valid photo Identification Card (ID), National Identification Number (NIN) and reachable telephone number of Next of Kin (NOK) or close relative. 

What NRC is saying 
The corporation is assuring the public that the security measures incorporated into its services on the rail track and at the station are to ensure the safety of all passengers nationwide. 

  • Mahmood also urged the public to cooperate with the corporation in order to enjoy a safe and comforting service.
  • The NRC also said it is committed to ensuring the safe return of the abducted victims of the train attack back in March. 

Brief background to the story 
On the evening of March 28th, bandits attacked a passenger train carrying 362 people along the Abuja-Kaduna rail track in Northern Nigeria. Reports say that in this attack, bandits abducted an unknown number of people while killing 8 passengers and injuring others. This attack caused severe damage to the train and rail tracks of the Abuja-Kaduna rail line. 

  • Since that time, the federal government of Nigeria has improved the rail lines infrastructure, passed extra measures to avoid the repetition of such sad events and beefed up security at the several train stations all over the country.
