The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)

President Buhari has rejected section 84 (12) of the electoral bill he signed into law. He said the rejection is coming after several consultations from ministries, departments and agencies.

Why it matters.
The rejected Section 84 (12) of the electoral law restricts lawmakers currently in a political position from voting or being voted for. President Muhammadu Buhari, while speaking at the signing ceremony, referred to it as in conflict with extant constitutional provisions.

A part of the speech reads “it will be stretching things beyond the constitutional limit to import extraneous restriction into the constitution on account of practical application of section 84(12) of the bill where political parties’ conventions and congresses were to hold earlier than 30 days to the election.”

The President further expressed his gratitude to the lawmakers for their commitment to the former electoral bill.
