A committee appointed by the National Assembly is looking to include a life pension for presiding officers in the National Assembly.

The Big Picture.
The committee is the National Assembly’s Joint Special Ad Hoc Committee appointed to review the 1999 constitution. The committee also made 16 recommendations to the constitution under review. All members of the National Assembly are to think about it and vote for or against it come Tuesday.

This recommendation by the committee, if passed, would see the Senate President and his deputy and the Speaker of the House of Representatives and his deputy receive pension payments for life. Speaking in an interview the Deputy Director, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, Kola Dare said that passing such a bill is a complete waste of public funds. He added that the National Assembly should divert such funds to other sectors such as education.
