The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, has announced that the Federal Government has given certain security agencies permission to access NIN-SIM databases.
The Big Picture.
While speaking at LEAP 22, a technological event in Saudi Arabia, the Minister said some security institutions in the country can access the NIN-SIM databases without the Federal Government consent. He said that this is lawful under cybercrime laws as it would help the agencies fight crime.
Although the Minister didn’t list the names of the agencies with such access, he said that the institutions have the approval of President Buhari. Giving the number of successful NIN-SIM linkages, Isa Pantami said that the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has captured well over 73 million Nigerians.
