On Tuesday, the Senate called on the Committee of Interior to reinforce prisons following recent jailbreaks reports. The Senate stressed they must tackle these jailbreak situations head on.
Why it matters?
In recent times, jail breaks have become too frequent for the situation to go unchecked. Putting this into perspective, in about five years, there have been reports of over 12 jail breaks all across the Nation.
The Senate summoned the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa to enlighten the lawmakers on the reality of the situation and to deliberate preventive measures.
The Special Assistant to President of the Senate, Ezrel Tabiowo said in a statement titled ‘Senate probes jailbreaks across Nigeria that, “the attacks caused by a security breach of the Jos Medium Security Correctional Centre, was a setback to the relative and much-desired peace in Plateau North.”
The Senate giving recommendation to the Ministry of Interior has called for reinforcements of physical protection system and mechanism at correctional centers.
