Elon Musk conducted an online poll seeking the public’s opinion on whether he should step down as the head of Twitter, a social media platform he gained back in October. The poll which started on Sunday ended on Monday with most participants (57.5 percent or 17.5 million people) voting for the Tesla boss to step down as CEO.

Why it matters
During the few weeks of Elon Musk’s administration, many have judged his actions as being too chaotic and controversial for such a big company like Twitter.

State of play
The potential resignation of Elon Musk as the CEO of Twitter wouldn’t be a surprise to many as he has always dismissed the value of corporate titles. Last month Elon Musk claimed he planned to step down as CEO in the future. However, whether or not Elon Musk relinquishes his position as CEO, he still owns Twitter.

The big picture
Elon Musk’s tenure as the CEO of Twitter has so far been tainted by controversies and outrages from famous figures and users that drove lots of bad press and even caused some advertisers to exit the social media platform.

  • Elon Musk’s Twitter role has impacted his personal finances and other businesses, including his global electric car company, Tesla. Tesla took massive hits after Musk completed the takeover of Twitter as the billionaire liquidated a large amount of his Tesla stock to finance his Twitter deal and to keep the company afloat.
  • However, it remains to be seen if Elon Musk would abide by the result of his Twitter poll, even though he has honoured all results of his previous polls.
